Cooperation in the region

The international recognition of a biosphere reserve by UNESCO is a mark of quality and a unique selling point for a region. At the same time, it is a motivation and mandate for the people and stakeholders living here to anchor and implement the biosphere reserve idea in their daily activities in the region.

The biosphere reserve administrations act as networking and communication partners. In order to anchor the biosphere reserve concept in the region, boards of trustees and advisory boards have been set up in the individual federal states. These committees are made up of representatives from all key stakeholder groups such as public administration, agriculture and forestry, tourism organizations, etc. and regularly exchange information on current issues and developments in the biosphere reserve.

Cross-state cooperation is coordinated by the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve State Working Group (Länder-AG). Representatives of the responsible ministries of all participating federal states are represented in the Länder-AG. The heads of the regional administrations also take part in the working meetings. The chairmanship of the Länder-AG rotates every two years between the participating federal states.

In addition, the biosphere reserve administrations are involved in numerous committees and working groups in the region to implement a sustainable development strategy (LEADER action groups, tourism advisory boards, etc.).
