World culture on wild shores

Recreation and tourism

The UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve stretches over 400 kilometers of river between Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony-Anhalt. The varied river landscape offers plenty of scope for different activities and presents itself in a unique and attractive way at any time of year. In winter, the Elbe's floods repeatedly change and shape the landscape. In early spring and fall, the impressive bird migration can be experienced particularly well. In summer, flower-filled meadows, majestic alluvial forests, old cultivated landscapes and the extensive sandbanks of the Elbe offer an extremely varied landscape experience.

The biosphere reserve therefore offers a wide range of opportunities for experiencing nature and culture as well as recreation all year round. On the following pages, we have summarized the most important information for hikes, bike tours and other nature and cultural experiences for you.
