World culture on wild shores

Highlights and ranger hints

The rangers are out and about throughout the year in the protected areas of the transnational Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve.

Here are some of her personal highlights and recommendations.

Saxony-Anhalt

"When the Havel is smooth and calm and the setting sun is reflected on the surface of the water, there is no more beautiful place for me. Occasionally, a beaver passes by or a family of ducks overtakes us. There's something new to discover every season."

Open landscape of the Oranienbaum Heath
"The Oranienbaumer Heide is a former military training area near Dessau, where a year-round pasture with cattle and horses was established in 2008. The animals' browsing allows very rare, low-competition plants to develop on 800 hectares. The semi-open landscape is highly attractive at any time of year, but visitors with an interest in botany and ornithology are particularly well catered for in spring. You will come across woodlarks, hoopoes, wrynecks, red-backed shrikes and nightjars. These are just a few species from the diverse spectrum of breeding birds there."

Lower Saxony

"My favorite place is the Heidberg. As soon as you have climbed it, a wonderful view over the Elbe awaits you. Especially in summer, the scent of pine needles fills your nose, you can hear the wild bees buzzing on the open sandy areas of its northern slope and birds chirping in the background. From here, you can walk around the entire Höhbeck, which rises out of the flat landscape as a geest island - along the way, you will find many exciting stories about its nature and history on various boards."

Cycle tour from Boizenburg to the Teldau and Suden lowlands
"The Teldau and the Suden lowlands are perfect for a bike tour. It is just as nice to explore the polder landscape on a hike. You can also cross the Elbe dyke to Boizenburg and take a tour of the historic old town and the Weidenschneck at the harbor, which are well worth seeing."

"Enjoy a canoe trip on the Sude from Gößlow towards Brömsenberg. When we check the Sude, I see something new along the banks almost every time. You can hire boats for a canoe trip in Jessenitz."

Lübtheen Heath National Natural Heritage Site
"Since 2021, the former military training area can once again be accessed by pedestrians and cyclists on designated paths. For your own safety, stay on these paths, as many areas away from them are still heavily contaminated with munitions. The special landscape features of the Lübtheen Heath National Natural Heritage Site are impressive dunes, unfragmented heathland and pine forests. There is a high risk of forest fires here, so the following applies: Open fires are prohibited - this also applies to cigarette butts!"
